Please join me at the May 2nd SLU Community Council meeting this Tuesday at 4 PM. Participating in this community organization in our rapidly growing neighborhood has been very educational and a great way to find out who is doing what in our neighborhood ! There are many ways to get involved in our great neighborhood.  Please make an effort to connect this Spring !

Next Event: April and May Community Gardening in the Dexter Corridor !

Where are the flowers ?

Lots of construction still going on.  Where are the flowers and plants ?  Tara is excited to announce community flower planting and gardening in the Dexter Corridor Neighborhood in Seattle.  She is busy getting sponsors and solidifying beautification needs. Next up, Tara is touring the neighborhood with a city arborist to get recommendations and guidelines.

Where are the street vendors ?

Tara is meeting with a local flower vendor to set-up a cart along the sidewalk this late Spring, Summer.

Stay Tuned !

SLU Civic Bootcamp !

Who Needs a Bootcamp ?

When I heard about Civic Bootcamp, I was immediately intrigued and but sure what to expect. I have been volunteering my whole life. I did not need a "bootcamp" to get motivated crossed my mind. However the event was located close to home and the agenda was especially interesting. Being a freelance professional, I also qualified for a scholarship which was another win !

It was a rainy and full day of great networking and learning that started at Mohai (Museum of History and Industry) ! After coffe and an opening speech from the Director of Mohai, Leonard Garfield, we were on foot !

Mohai

Our 1st stop on the tour was the Center for Wooden Boats which my family and I are a member of.  This great non profit has inexpensive programs to teach youth sailing and brings in these eager sailors from all over Wa every summer.  There is also a free Sunday sail and much more ! Mike Mcquaid of the SLU Community Council gave us a great talk about this landmark and many others throughout the day.

The Center for Wooden Boats. Recreate on a historical waterway, Lake Union, named for bringing the Puget Sound and Lake Wa. together.

How to create community in the heart of a tech neighborhood ? There is much more to SLU Amazon. We stopped at Madart which is a hot bed for creative art exhibits and trys to lure in the workforce from behind their smart phones.

Mad Art on Westlake Ave. Put down your phone and come in !

Old with the new ! Look-up. SLU is incorporating old with new with some creative developers.

Highlights for me included learning about historic preservation and some specific projects as well as attending a church I did not know was also a homeless shelter, Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Immanuel Lutheran Church in the Cascade Neighborhood near SLU.

The nearby YMCA Cascade People's Center was also a win for me due to the many outdoor youth programs it offers. Nearby Mirabella, retirement home, also reminded me that there was an energetic group of seniors in SLU and a stop at Cafe Torino reminded me that there were non-corporate small businesses that needed our support !

Cafe Torino, Italy in the heart of SLU !

The neighborhood was much more than Amazon. Along the way I had great conversations with other "uber volunteers." 1 women had traveled all the way from Bremerton to incorporate findings from the day into her own neighborhood.  There was also a group of lawyers there to see another side of the neighborhood as well as corporate employees learning about how their companies might help build community. We toured on foot and on a street car in and out of buildings and listed to interesting speakers.   We also met councilwomen, Sally Bagshaw, who spoke during lunch at the church and emphasized contacting her at any time for support with a cause.

Lunch with Councilwomen Sally Bagshaw

My favorite speaker was Kathy Sakahara, from the League of Women Voters, who honed in on the importance of picking 1 cause rather than many in order to make the most traction.

This is now my goal for 2017

Kathy mentioned it was very easy to get stuck on the little things.

The biggest surprise ? I was one of the few locals that attended which was eye opening on the importance of promoting my neighbors to connect and become involved citizens.

Final takeaway: Start small and grow an issue and START !

Getting Married in My Neighborhood: Lake Union

When the SLU Chamber mentioned the were in need of content for their monthly newsletter, I volunteered to write about my experience planning a wedding in the neighborhood !
It was so much fun keeping the wedding local.

My Wedding Blog, 2 Hours in SLU !

Dexter Ave Neighborhood Night Out !

This past summer, I led my first Night-Out event ! My thought was to get neighbors together with the few nearby businesses and corporations to connect, learn about an issue on the rise, crime, and enjoy great food and a live band ! It looked like there were many "new" to Seattle transplants moving when passing by the bus stops and apartment buildings that had gone up in the last year. Construction was everywhere and there was peak traffic due to this but I still wanted to hold the event !

Location

With Dexter Corridor not being a traditional neighborhood, where in the world should I host this ? Being a former Starbucks partner, my instinct was to hold the event near the local store, Dexter Station, which had recently opened beside the new Facebook Seattle location. This building was managed by JLL. I "cold-called" the building manager to tell her about the event and ask permission to use the space in front of the building.  Claire Swinbank was very friendly and said yes quickly upon obtaining approval from Facebook.
I posted these flyers all over businesses on Dexter Ave with permission and even at the bus stops.  I also emailed them to the property manager of some of the new apartment buildings.

Community Partners

What was next ? I wanted to talk to involved people in Southlake Union (SLU).  As a solo individual, could I get this off the ground ?  I met Noelle Smithhart of Vulcan and the SLU Discovery Center for coffee to share my idea of creating more community in my backyard. I also connected with Mike Mcquaid of the SLU Community Council and Danah Abhar of the SLU Chamber of Commerce.  Seattle Police department leads Terrie Johnston and Sam Cook were more than willing to add us to the "beat" that evening.
Everyone embraced the idea and the SLU Chamber and SLU Community Council agreed to sponsor the event.  I also connected with the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods as were offering grants for these types of events. That experience was not quite so streamlined and an eye-opener but I still moved forward.

Food always brings people together !

Community Business Support

I wanted to start small and felt I was launching the event in a great location as there were a few restaurants and nearby businesses.  Both Starbucks and a new pub called Mollusk offered up a wonderful spread of pastries, appetizers and cold beverages at no cost.  The Swedish Club also offered up a display table to promote their cause as well as the Seattle Police Department.

Where to find a band ? Noelle Smithhart's partner, Bradford, was in a great band called "Madness Blooms" and they agreed to perform at a discounted rate.

The Show Must Go On !

Sure enough, the afternoon of the event it began to rain with no sun in sight ! How would our neighbors, food & beverage, partners and the band stay dry ? Under an awning of course ! Thankfully Facebook had a great 1 which we had not thought of using as it was summer.

It rained off and on but we had a great showing and an awning at the Facebook building to keep us dry !

Diverse Neighbors

The event brought out about 30 attendees and the music definitely helped ! This was a cross section of neighbors, a few dogs, sponsors and neighborhood workers.

My goal of bringing neighbors together was met and beyond.  I would like to continue to hold the event and promote more starting in the Spring. I would like a few partners (clones) to help me organize and spread the word ! Finally, a neighborhood is not defined by rows of homes and picket fences. It is defined by people and passion !

Thanks to all who supported this fun event !

Welcome to Dexter Corridor Community !

Hello Neighbors:

Lots going on in the neighborhood with new apartment and office building construction.  I have seen many new faces on my bus commute and expect to see and meet more folks out and about this summer.  Kicking -off this group to build community in the Dexter Corridor.  Let's meet-up on August 2nd at National Night Out and learn about neighborhood resources, meet the fire department, Seattle PD and enjoy food and a LIVE band ! The goal is to have a coffee/tea meetup once a month starting in August ! Would like to create a group for neighbors who might not otherwise meet, to get together.  Large apartment buildings and condos are not conducive to this.

What is community ?  According to Google.....
com·mu·ni·ty
kəˈmyo͞onədē/
noun
  1. 1.
a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
    "Rhode Island's Japanese community"
    synonyms:groupbodysetcirclecliquefactionMore
  2. 2.
a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
"the sense of community that organized religion can provide"

The "Dexter Corridor" is constantly evolving. This photo is from the late 1800's in a time where there might have been more community. Looking forward to meeting and building something great !

Sincerely,

Tara Boucher
